It is a highly technical field that involves the chemical and biological analysis of food as well as its preparation and preservation. This field of study is expanding as people demand more healthy and convenient foods. It requires a multidisciplinary approach to research, combining the knowledge of several sciences, such as biology, chemistry, biochemistry, math, engineering and technology.

When writing about food, it is important to consider the impact of language. Using derogatory or racist terms can be a form of microaggression. It is also important to avoid food appropriation, which is when people from outside a cuisine profit from it. For example, using the term “elevated street food” to describe a dish from Mexico or India can be offensive and perpetuate colonialism. Similarly, saying that a dish has been “discovered” by white people can be seen as an implication of racism.
