Many people have special dietary needs or restrictions that influence what they eat. These may include an allergy to a particular food, a medical condition such as Coeliac disease, or a preference for certain types of food like vegetarianism or pescatarianism.

Plant-Based Foods
These include fruits, vegetables, nuts, seeds, and grains. They are high in fibre and nutrients, especially antioxidants, which protect the body from chronic diseases.
Milk, Yoghurt, Cheese, and Alternatives
These foods are a good source of protein and calcium. When selecting these foods, choose lower fat versions, such as semi-skimmed or 1% milk; low fat yoghurt; and reduced sugar or no sugar added varieties of hard cheese.
Fish and Shellfish
These contain essential fatty acids, minerals, and vitamins. They are a good source of protein, particularly fatty fish such as salmon and trout. They are also an excellent source of omega-3 fatty acids, which can help reduce the risk of heart disease.
Other Foods
This group includes meat, poultry, and dairy products. It is important to avoid processed meat, which contains preservatives and saturated fat. Processed dairy products, such as butter and cheese, should be avoided, as they contain trans-fats. Try to eat a range of different foods, including lean cuts of meat, chicken and pork, fish, and eggs. It is recommended to eat a variety of nuts and seeds as well, as they are a source of vitamin B6, potassium, zinc, magnesium, and selenium. Try to eat sweet potatoes and root vegetables, such as carrots, beetroot, and parsnips, which are rich in vitamin C. It is also a good idea to drink a minimum of 8 glasses of water each day. The best way to do this is to get into the habit of drinking water first thing in the morning before breakfast.
