Writing about food can be a controversial topic. Unethical writing may promote racial or cultural stereotypes, or perpetuate the myth that some foods are better for you than others. It can also promote food appropriation, when a person from outside of a culture profits from that culture’s cuisine. For example, white people who write about Mexican, Indian, or Chinese food can be considered to be exploiting those cultures. This type of writing is known as elitist and patronizing. On the other hand, well-written food writing can inspire readers and encourage them to try new dishes and cuisines.
